How Do You Know If You're Ready?

There's A New Way of Doing Business...

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with growing your business, or like your practice is going nowhere fast, trust me: you aren’t alone, and it isn’t your fault.

I’ve seen this pattern over and over with my clients, and I can vividly remember having those same thoughts, myself.

Specifically, the day that I realized that what I was doing as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner just wasn’t working.

I had done what I was "supposed" to do: worked with some 1:1 clients, set up group classes and networked with other practitioners to try to get some momentum.

And yet, I was struggling.

Struggling to get my name out there.

Struggling to get new clients consistently.

Struggling to make enough money for my friends and family (and myself?) to consider my business more than just a hobby.

It was for sure a jobby at that point. ;)

Mainly, I was struggling to see how I could truly make an impact and change the health and lives of others without being a slave to social media. <--Story for another day...

The clients I did have were were plenty motivated in the beginning, but usually didn’t stick around very long after that initial surge of excitement wore off because I hadn't figured out how to keep them "in the game" at that point.

(Luckily, that was an easy issue to fix. I'll explain more in a minute...)

But consistent income? What was that?

I was burned out…

I knew something needed to change.

After all, my own health problems and adrenal burnout were what set me on the path to get my Nutritional Therapy certification in the first place. The information I learned and used to heal myself was so powerful, I couldn’t imagine NOT sharing it with everybody.

But my practice wasn’t very profitable --  not in the way I dreamed it could be.

Where the heck were all the clients? And how could I run a profitable business while also taking care of my own health and being present for my family?

There had to be another way.

[SPOILER ALERT!!!]

There is another way.

Story time...

You see, more years ago than I care to admit, I was a 22 year old newbie real estate agent trying to find my way in business.

“Okay, Andrea, but what does 22 year old newbie real estate agent you have to do with me and my wellness practice??”

Lots, actually. Stay with me...

I started out in real estate in the traditional way, finding buyers, finding sellers, always looking for more prospects, always having that fear of the pipeline drying up. And working with first-time homebuyers in a foreclosure market wasn’t pretty. <--Definition of insanity.

I quickly realized just how difficult and inefficient it is to do business this way: by just taking any kind of business that came my way.

Always on the hunt for new clients, always wondering where that next lead is going to come from. After all, clients don’t just appear out of thin air. You have to go out and *find* them.

After some trial and error and LOTS of time spent working with clients who drained my time and energy to the max, I started my own real estate brokerage, and I made a big pivot:

I started only working with the types of clients who I could help on a recurring basis - cash investors who were always looking for new investment properties.

Instead of spending tons of time marketing and looking for new first-time homebuyer clients, I was doing the actual work that I enjoyed and was really good at -- finding good deals and getting results for my happy, repeat clients, and making a reliable income month after month at the same time.

Okay, now flash forward to my work as a certified NTP.  I quickly realized that I could apply the same “membership model” that I used in the real estate industry to the work I was doing with clients in my nutritional therapy practice.

*LIGHTBULB MOMENT*

I got super specific on the exact kind of clients I wanted to work with, that I knew I could serve on a deep level, and poured into them month after month instead of sporadic, one-time appointments.

And it worked.

My members were making HUGE progress and the energy in my business had shifted from desperate and doubtful to confident and consistently profitable.

I also quickly saw just how many other holistic nutritionists and practitioners like me who knew SO MUCH and could help so many people were getting stuck before they ever really even got their practice off the ground.

For some people, it was imposter syndrome and fear of not knowing enough.

For others, it was the overwhelm of finding clients and being visible to their peers.

And for those that did find clients, it was the overwhelm of trying to fit in more 1:1 clients into their already packed schedules.

We’ve all felt that way at some point.  But I’m willing to bet that you didn’t get into this field just to quit and end up overwhelmed and feeling like a fake, right?

I didn't think so. ;)

Here's the good news -- you can overcome the trap of imposter syndrome and business overwhelm.

You can move forward with building a practice that serves you as much as it serves your clients (while also turning a profit and making an income you're proud of).

But you have to be willing to take the next step.

Even when you’re not 100% sure.

Even when you're having a serious case of FEAR and self-doubt because you've never done it before.

Even when you don’t have all the answers and it's easier to just do nothing and "think about it".

Because doing nothing is still a decision. And doing nothing is just failing in advance.

You’re NOT here because you want to sign up for a one-way trip to failure-land, right?

Whether you’re just beginning or you’re knee-deep in burnout, you’re here because you’re ready to make progress with your practice, and you don’t have to do it alone.

So, come on, let’s get you some clarity and results right now!

If you're still reading at this point, I can tell you're ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work.

(And I love that about you!)

Still not convinced about the New Way of doing business?

Let's chat about it some more.

For the past few years, I’ve been a group leader and business mentor for the hands-on, in-person Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner training workshops, as well as doing private business coaching and running a very engaged wellness-biz coaching membership.

Let's just say I’ve had a chance to see a lot of people go through the journey of getting started as a newbie wellness practitioners.

And I see the same thing every time.

At the first workshop in the beginning of the year, the room is full of bright-eyed, hopeful students. They’re excited, energized and ready to change the world. You can feel the energy in the room.

But by the time the last workshop rolls around 6 months later, it’s a completely different vibe.

It’s like the energy and excitement has been sucked right out of the room. Almost all of the students are second-guessing themselves.

They’re on the cusp of finishing their certification; The parachute is packed, they’re in the airplane and they’re ready to jump, but suddenly they’re walking themselves back. Waaaay back.

I don’t really know enough.”

“I’m not sure I can actually turn this into a real business.”

“Maybe I should get another certification before I start working with clients.”

“I haven’t completely healed myself yet so how can I help other people?”

"I'm just not good at the business side of things."

Whoa, what happened in those 9 months?? They’ve learned so much and are equipped to change lives, so why are they suddenly so afraid to move forward?

Here’s the thing: It’s totally normal to have these doubts, to question your knowledge or your ability to do this work. We all have those moments of impostor syndrome (yep, even me, after helping thousands of people at this point).

Those uncomfortable feelings don’t go away, by the way.

They're like the signposts on the road telling you that you're heading in the right direction because it's a little scary.

But what I started to see, over and over, is that while these amazing certification programs provide us with powerful, life-changing knowledge, they don’t necessarily teach the skills you need to run your business.

That’s right, your business. Not a job. It’s a subtle shift in perspective, but a really important one. You're a CEO now, not an employee!

Ok, back to the elephant in the room with the "old way of doing business" that most of us are taught as part of our certifications:

"The Old Way" is based on the old brick and mortar model of doing business with 1:1 clients only in a physical office.

You know, set up shop, print your business cards, and people will instantly start flocking to you and begging to book time with you. You'll easily create enough income in your practice with 1:1 client work to live happily ever after because everyone needs your help!

Except this "old way" of running a wellness business is a quick path to burnout and bankruptcy.

Why?

Because building your practice exclusively with hourly appointments for 1:1 clients means that your business growth is completely dependent on your time.

After all, there are only so many hours in a day that you can book clients and remain a sane and healthy person.

Even if you're lucky enough to fill all of those available hours (which would put you in the minority for sure!) you’ll quickly reach the point where you can’t serve any more clients and you can’t earn more money.

Take out your calculator and do some quick math on the number of hours you will be available to see clients each week, keeping in mind that you'll need time before each appointment to prepare, and multiply that by the amount you'd charge per hour.

That's how much you could make each week if you were booked solid.

Now multiply that amount by 4 to figure out your average monthly income and subtract the cost of your office rent and utilities each month to get an estimate of how much you would profit.

Are you comfortable with that number?

Whether or not that income amount is going to be enough to sustain your business (and I would bet it's not even close), let me ask you this:

What happens if you get sick? Or your kids get sick?

What happens when you go on vacation?

What happens if there's a family emergency and you can't take clients for a period of time?

The answer: You don't get paid.

There is no income, but your expenses will keep piling up.

If this is making you feel a little anxious about the future of your business, good. That's the point.

We've all been taught a business model for how to build our practices that is based on what worked 20 years ago, but obviously things are different, now.

What's so exciting is the world is changing, and it's never been easier to start and scale a thriving wellness biz that isn't dependent on hours-for-dollars.

The "New Way" of doing business is here, and we're at the cutting edge, my friend!

There are so many innovative ways to serve your clients that will get them far better results than one on one appointments alone.

Ways that provide more flexibility and value for you and allow you to take a vacation, work from anywhere in the world you choose, or take a sick day without sacrificing your income.

We're going to dive into those on the next page.

Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

Hopefully you're yelling, “HELL YES, let’s do this!” at your computer screen right now...

(That's what I like to imagine as I write this.)

Or, you might be saying, “Well, Andrea, that sounds great, but I wouldn’t even know where to start. I’m a nutritionist, not a business person. Technology is so not my thing.”

And that’s okay and totally normal, too.

I want to invite you to accept and embrace that voice of uncertainty and doubt, of being stuck in overwhelm or not knowing where to start.

And decide to move forward with learning more about the "New Way" of doing business anyway. Yes, it can be a little scary and overwhelming, but you got into this field to make a huge impact, and you don’t have to do it alone.

In the next few pages and videos, I’m going to walk with you through some of the basics, step by step.

Why? Because I know that it can be just a little bit scary to get started.

But I also know that you, like so many of the other amazing practitioners I know, have some serious value to share with the world. Value in the form of knowledge that has the power to change lives.

And when you get the business basics down, you’ll be ready to focus on what you do best -- helping people.

Let's start with exactly how you want to help those people, shall we? I'll meet you on the next page at lesson 1.
