Selling Like A Dude Part 3: The Results

 

Let’s chat about The Results of my little “Selling Like A Dude” experiment, shall we?

Ok, we’re almost ready to dive in and talk about what happened when I started SELLING my lead magnet to strangers on the internet with paid ads, but first let me just remind you that I’m not even very good at this, yet. 

And I’m still getting results.

Here’s what happened when I started running a brand new Facebook / Instagram ads campaign to SELL my 28 page Ultimate Membership Startup Guide PDF for $10.

Originally, that PDF was going to be a free lead magnet on my website but, as you know from reading Part 1: The Theory I had the hypothesis that it would be easier to capture the attention of my ideal clients / members by charging for this PDF instead of offering it for free.

I was also thinking it would be much more sustainable to run paid ads if I could see them paying off in real time.

(I mean that quite literally. The PDF sales in PayPal fund the ads each day so I'm not even paying out of pocket in that sense.)

We’re going to look at the data for the first 90 days of this brand new ad campaign that consisted of 2 different ads:

One video ad and one graphic image ad. 

Nothing fancy, here. It took less than an hour to get a video recorded on my iphone, upload it into the Facebook ads platform, and write the copy for the text of the ad itself.

Also keep in mind that each time someone purchased the Ultimate Startup Guide, they were also added to my email list and started getting my automated Profitable Practice Strategies email series which introduces them to my products and services.

Win/win, I'd say!

I started this campaign on June 12th by spending $14.66 and gradually increased the daily budget based on what was converting to paid membership guide purchasers.

Over the course of the first 90 days, here’s how it all shook out:

  • 284 BUYERS added to email list
  • $4,104.23 total ad spend
  • $8,229.00 total revenue directly from 2 ads
  • 2 total refunds (-$20)

 

So let’s talk about what that all means.

If 284 strangers on the internet bought a $10 PDF, shouldn’t that equal $2,840 in revenue?

Ah, yes, it should.

Except I layered on another experiment and offered an “Order Bump” and a “One Click Upsell” to that PDF guide checkout page which contributed to…

Drum roll…

The Snowball Effect.

Selling Like A Dude is all about leveraging The Snowball Effect.

Inside the platform I use to run my whole business it’s super simple to set up an Order Bump and One Click Upsell to increase the order value at checkout. Don’t get caught up on the tech details yet, just trust me it’s super easy to do if you want to take your sales to the next level.

Just let me explain how and why I wanted to experiment with these features, which I hadn't ever maximized before.


My thought process on setting up this checkout page was this:

If a stranger from the internet who had never heard of me before clicked through to the checkout page to get their Ultimate Membership Startup Guide for $10, they were probably interested in setting up a profitable membership site and streamlining their business systems.

Pretty logical, right?

So I set up an Order Bump inside the checkout process that sold my Take Charge With Trello mini-course for $37. All they needed to do to get that course was click a little checkbox and it would be added to the cart. Easy peasy.

Many of the purchasers added that little ditty to their cart so they could streamline and organize their biz digitally. Perfect!

After successfully checking out with the $10 guide and optional $37 course, purchasers were then taken to a page with a video of me explaining how my full Membership Magic program works, which made a one-time offer to get that course at a discounted rate.

(Remember, it was totally optional! They had already purchased their guide, which was on its way to their inbox.)

For those who opted to take the one-time offer (OTO), the enrollment was automatically charged to their card without needing to enter payment details again.

Why do I tell you all these details?

Because when you’re Selling LIke A Dude I want you to think about how you can make it even easier for people to pay you for your awesomeness.

Read that, again. 🙌

It gets no easier than adding a few more options to add on at checkout. Totally frictionless.

You’re not adding ANY decisions prior to the payment that could deter your customer from finishing their purchase. Instead, the “extras” are offered afterwards.

Selling. Like. A. Dude.

Unapologetically, I might add.

I just want you to consider what it could be like for you to make it so easy for people to pay you for your expertise, my friend. 

If you don’t have a digital product for sale, don’t you worry one bit. 


You can sell your 1:1 packages, group coaching programs, live events, or even grow your network marketing business or physical product sales with this same process.
 

Ok, ok. Back to The Snowball Effect. Quit getting sidetracked, would ya? ;)

284 people purchased The Startup Guide for $10 which equaled $2,840 in sales directly coming from $4,104.23 in ad spend without taking the order bump and one-click upsell offers into consideration.

Which means without those little gems (aka The Snowball Effect) I was paying $1,264.23 out of pocket.

Would I be willing to go in the hole $1,264.23 to get 284 new email subscribers?

Honestly, I’m not sure if I would. But you might be fine with that if you know you will sell them something more expensive in the future, so it’s certainly an option.

I, however, wanted to get immediate results and just Sell Like A Fricken Dude so I added that $37 order bump and one-click upsell for the full Membership Magic course bundle…

Which is why that $4,104.23 ad spend investment directly resulted in $8,229.00 in revenue instead of $2,840.

Honestly, it blew my mind.

Put in $1...get $2 back.

Yes, please.

But that’s not all! *Said in best infomercial voice*

In addition to $8,229.00 I now had 284 people added to my email list that had already shown me they were BUYERS.

They were willing to spend some actual doll hairs on their business.

I think this is the biggest takeaway, my friend. The interwebs are noisy. It’s harder and hard to capture and maintain the attention of our dreamies online because of so many distractions and free shit available around every virtual corner.

Doesn't it seem like a great idea to filter for the “buyers” before they even get on your email list?

And beyond that, wouldn’t it stand to reason that those buyers will be much more likely to actually consume the juicy content you’re putting out if they pay for it? 

I think so. Which is why Selling Like A Dude is so fun.

Keep in mind, it’s impossible for me to tell you what the lifetime value of those 284 subscribers is to my business because several of them have purchased my Membership Magic course bundle at full price since subscribing, as well as enrolled in The UPLEVEL Experience membership.

So, really, those 284 buyers will generate significantly more revenue in my business than what I am reporting to you right now.
